Abeno-ku is situated on the southern elevation of the Uemachi Plateau. The area has traditionally thrived as the transport hub of southern Osaka; it is dotted with many places of interest and historical sites and has also developed as a place suitable for both residential and commercial purposes.
In particular, the main local transport terminals, Abenobashi and Tennoji, form the gateway to the south of Osaka, processing an average of approximately 820,000 people per day. The area surrounding the terminals is a vibrant commercial centre; however, the Abeno region overall mainly comprises relatively quiet residential areas.
Additionally, Abeno-ku has one of Osaka City's highest rates of population aging. Taking advantage of this, Abeno-ku is working hard to create a comfortable environment and a local community in which senior citizens can live active, enjoyable lives. Abeno-ku aims to develop an urban foundation that promotes warm, friendly communication between all local residents.
January 2002 saw the opening of the new complex that comprises the local citizen's hall and other facilities. There are great expectations for the complex as a local community centre where local residents can relax and enjoy each other's company.
Other redevelopment projects include the elevation of the railway tracks on the JR Hanwa Line.

The flower of Abeno-ku : Peach/Petunia
Peach/PetuniaThe peach and the petunia were appointed the official flowers of Abeno-ku in 1987.
Peach flowers are known and loved for their wonderful form, hue, and subtly sweet aroma. The flowers have traditionally grown in great numbers in Abeno-ku; there are a number of sites throughout Abeno-ku where peach flowers can be viewed, Momogaike Park being the best known. The petunia flower blooms in great numbers and in a variety of vivid colors and for long periods of time; it was also selected as the representative local flower as it was such an ideal match for the local vistas.
