Asahi-ku is located in the northeastern part of
Osaka City. It has the Yodogawa River at its north side, the Joto
Freight Line at its west side, National Route 163 at its south side,
and Moriguchi City to its east.
The advanced transportation infrastructure of Asahi-ku includes
National Routes 1 and 163, Hanshin Expressway, Shirokita Avenue,
Shirokita Koen Avenue and other major trunk lines, in addition to
the Subway Tanimachi Line and Keihan Railway, which connect to central
Osaka. Furthermore, construction works for double-tracking and electrification
of the Joto Freight Line are underway, making it operational for
passenger services. Also under construction for even more convenient
access to central Osaka is the Subway No.8 Line (Morishoji-Yamatogawa
Line).
As for its living environment, Asahi-ku boasts one of the largest
shopping complexes in Osaka, in addition to many other shopping
arcades, which contribute to the development of the district as
a pleasant residential area with interactive, bright surroundings.
Asahi-ku has many facilities for the local community as well. The
underground Asahi Sports Center contributes greatly to the promotion
of local sports activities. There is also a community complex for
local activities, comprising the citizens' hall, creative arts center,
library and other facilities for learning, culture and exchange.
The district has one of the richest natural environments in the
city too. Shirokita Park, adjacent to the Yodogawa river area, has
genuine circular iris garden, beloved by Osaka citizens as one of
the oldest of its type in the Kansai region. In the estuary of the
Yodogawa River, diverse aquatic species are found, including an
endangered fish designated as a national treasure, Acheilognathus
longipinnis.
