Notification of the 2010 Census

■What is a census?
A census is a nation’s most important statistical investigation, when it determines the size of its population and the actual conditions of households. Japan’s census takes place every five years on October 1. The census results are used for such things as welfare and medicine, as well as for making life easier for non-Japanese residents.
The census form that you fill in will not be used by immigration authorities or the police under any circumstances.

■Who must participate in the census?
All (including those of non-Japanese nationality) who have lived in Japan for three months or more.
NB: Those who as of October 1st have lived in Japan for three months or more are also required to participate.

■Census content
A total of 20 questions, 15 of them about members of the household, including gender, date of birth, employment status, and numbers of members, and 5 of them about the household itself, such as kind of residence, etc.

■How the census will be carried out
Census personnel will visit all households between September 23rd and 30th, distributing census forms. All census personnel will be wearing on their person a census personnel identification certificate and an arm band. They will also have multi-lingual explanatory material (in 27 languages).

■How to submit your completed census form
Select one of the following means of submitting your form, and send it between October 1st and 7th.
(1)Submission by post
(2)Submission to census personnel
Osaka City requests that you submit your census form by post. (There is no need to affix any stamps to the envelope you are given to submit your census form in.)
Even if you do submit your census form to census personnel, you should submit it in the envelope provided. Census personnel cannot see your responses.
