Overview of Higashisumiyoshi Ward
Established on April 1, 1943

HigashiSumiyoshi-ku is situated in the southern part of Osaka City; to the east is Hirano-ku, to the west, Abeno-ku and Sumiyoshi-ku, and to the north, Ikuno-ku. The Yamato River borders HigashiSumiyoshi-ku to the south and across the river is Matsubara City. The ward is 2.8 km east-west and 6.4 km north-south, a total area of 9.75 km2, making it the eighth largest administrative ward in the city.

Society has begun to age rapidly in the past few years, and HigashiSumiyoshi-ku has worked hard with people in the area to establish one of the first local cooperative support systems for elderly people.

HigashiSumiyoshi-ku also contributes to the creation and maintenance of an inclusive community. The ward boasts a number of facilities that help disabled persons participate actively in society, including sports center for disabled persons in Nagai Park, the Yata community hall for disabled persons, and the Hayakawa Welfare Hall.

Culturally, HigashiSumiyoshi-ku has many facilities that are widely used and enjoyed by local citizens, including a museum of natural history and botanical gardens in Nagai Park, and a center providing information about flowers, greenery, and other matters relating to nature.

On the sporting front, Nagai Park features a stadium, which hosted a number of the 2002 FIFA World Cup matches and the 2007 IAAF World Championships in Athletics. Nagai Stadium is also home to the professional soccer team Cerezo Osaka, and is always jam-packed with soccer fans during the season. It is a truly world-class sports stadium and is very popular among the wider community.

The flower of HigashiSumiyoshi Ward :
Wild pink (Caryophyllaceae; originally from China)
Also known as the dianthus, and further counted as one of the "seven grasses of autumn," this flower has long been known and loved. There are many kinds and colors, and some improved varieties bloom all year round, making them rare, as western species tend to blossom in the spring, Japanese species in the autumn.

The wild pink was grown in large volumes in HigashiSumiyoshi-ku before WWII for shipping purposes and has been very popular among locals ever since. The flower is very refined and pretty and is not bothered by cold weather, which led to it being selected for a planting program in the ward held in October 1985.

Produced in Europe, China, North America, Japan
Flower-inspired catch phrase: Deep love
