In
1987, round and rectangular burial mounds, thought to be from the early
fifth century, were discovered. Boat- and house-shaped clay figures and
a range of other artifacts-33 in total-were unearthed here and have since
been designated as important national cultural assets. These days, the
boat-shaped motif can be seen in many places around town, as well as the
shrine's stone pillar.
