Mononobe clan threw away a Buddhist image in the 13th year of the Emperor Kinmei(Nihonshoki). Legend has it that Honda Yoshimitsu later picked the image from the Amidaike pond at this temple and that he contributed it to the Zenkoji temple(Nagano Prefecture) as its main image.
When the Buddhist image was unveiled in the Shitennoji temple in the 7th year of Genroku(1694), a shrine was set up to worship around here. It was the origin of the temple.
