Overview of river works
Rivers serve three main functional roles: flood control, water utilization, and environmental. Flood control refers to the prevention of flood damage and water utilization describes the use of water for waterworks, agricultural use, and ship-based transportation. The environmental function of rivers emerges from a recognition of rivers as valuable riparian space in terms of helping to forge a unique relationship between residents and the water in their midst. In a broad sense, river projects are defined by respect for and adherence to these functions.
