In Japan children are required by law to attend elementary school (6
years) and junior high school (3 years). Classes are conducted in Japanese.
Municipal schools are free of charge, but
there is a charge for meals provided by the school lunch program and
for some of the educational materials used at the schools.
If you want to send your child to a municipal school, bring your Alien Registration Certificate to the Registrar
of Residents, Residents Information Section, at the ward office of the
ward in which you reside.
Those who desire to send their child to an international school or
private school should directly contact the school of their choice for
information. (List of schools for foreigners)
