Shosaian is the name of the place at which Osho Ikkyu (1394-1481) partially
resided in his twilight years. It is said that Ikkyu was the illegitimate
child of Emperor Go-Komatsu; he was known to be very unsophisticated and
to have been constantly traveling between Kyoto, Nara, and Sakai. Ikkyu
came to Sakai from Nara in 1469 and resided in Sumiyoshi. The following
year, wealthy Sakai tycoon Sorin Owa (who is also known for recreating
the Daitokuji temple monastery) created a hermitage for Ikkyu to live
in. Ikkyu referred to his residence as Unmonan and brought his entourage
of disciples with him. He later built another hermitage in a corner of
the property and named this one Shosaian. |
