Long ago, the Hosoe River was an inlet into the ancient Sumiyoshi harbor;
indeed, poets have sung the praises of the historical river, such as in
Manyoshu. These days, a section of approximately 600 m in the upper reaches
of the river has been restored to its former babbling, trickling, fascinating
glory. Within that section, several sub-sections have been created and
dubbed the Manyo Zone, named after the foregoing poetry collection, the
Asobi (recreation) Zone, and the Shiki (four seasons) Zone. Monuments
featuring inscriptions of prose are dotted throughout the area, and Rabbit-Ear
Irises can also been seen here and there, making this a favorite place
among locals for rest and recreation. |
