Gained ISO 22000 accreditation  EStriving to provide safer, higher-quality water  E/h2>

On December 27, 2008, the Osaka City Waterworks Bureau became the world’s first public water service provider to gain ISO 22000, an international standard for food safety management.
Issued in September 2005, ISO 22000 specifies the requirements for establishing a management system that ensures the provision of safe food for customers.
ISO 22000 uses a safety management approach called HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point). By controlling critical control points under the ISO management system and making continual improvements, food safety can be managed.

The Waterworks Bureau has engaged in a broad variety of efforts to provide safer and higher-quality water. Amid growing concern over food and water safety among its customers as a result of frequent food safety threats in recent years, the World Health Organization (WHO) advocated in the third edition of the WHO Guidelines for Drinking-water Quality that water safety plans incorporating the HACCP approach be established.

Against such backdrop, striving for a more advanced safety management and quality control of drinking water, the Waterworks Bureau integrated its water safety plans and other initiatives relating to quality control and safety management so as to establish a water safety management system that complied with the ISO 9001 international quality standards, under which the Osaka purification plants were certified in November 2006. The established system, responsible for safety management of drinking water, industrial water and bottled water “Honmaya! Esupplied by the Bureau, passed an examination by an external certification body, and gained ISO 22000 accreditation on December 27, 2008.

The Waterworks Bureau will inform its customers about operation of the water safety management system, as needed, in an easy-to-understand manner, while reflecting the opinions and needs of its customers in improvements to the management system, thus striving to provide more reliable water service in collaboration with local residents.
