The Water Quality Management Program for Osaka City Waterworks has been established with the objective of determining whether or not tap water in Osaka City complies with the water quality standards set on the basis of the Water Supply Law, and to ensure the safety of the water supply. The program is built around the four separate subprograms listed below. It integrates all the tests required to supply safe tap water, setting out the water quality monitoring and tests to be carried out at each of the various stages – water sources, purification plants, water faucets (taps) – in order to respond to the demand by customers for even safer water. Surveys of substances such as endocrine disrupters (so-called “environmental hormones”) that are the subject of environmental concern are also incorporated into the program.
Among the subprograms listed above, the formulation and disclosure of the Water Quality Examination Subprogram are now required by law, in accordance with the new water quality standards that came into effect in April 2004. Overall, in consideration of the particular characteristics of the water sources for Osaka City, these four subprograms also incorporate tests for 208 chemical substances and microorganisms, far in excess of the 50 items for testing required by Japanese national law.
The Water Examination Laboratory of Osaka City Waterworks Bureau has achieved Water Quality Testing Good Laboratory Practice (Waterworks GLP) Certification by the Japan Water Works Association for its water quality testing quality control system, and publishes highly reliable water quality testing results.
