Q
Can you give me some tips on how to save water at home and how much money I can save?
A
There are various tips on saving water at home, such as using water-saving devices and adopting more efficient ways of using water in everyday life. If you carry out some of the practices simultaneously, you will be able to realize savings. The most important thing is that each family member should be conscious and careful about saving water.
Here are some examples of how you can save water at home and how much money you can save.
※ Suppose you are a family of three and the price of water is E0.22 per liter, including sewage service rate and consumption tax. (Note: this unit price applies to a monthly total water consumption of 50 cubic meters.)
(1) The leftover bath water of an average household amounts to about 180 liters per day, although it differs from family to family, depending on the lifestyle. If you use the half of that water for laundry, cleaning and watering roads, you can save about 90 liters. If you reuse leftover bath water every day, you can save about \600 per month, as compared to non-reuse.
(90 liters x E0.22/liter x 30 days ≁EE594)
(2) If you let the water run for 30 seconds while rinsing your mouth after brushing your teeth, you use about six liters of water. If instead you use a mug to rinse your mouth, you use only three mugs of water (about 0.6 liters) and can save about five liters of water. If all the family members brush their teeth twice a day, you can save about E200 yen as compared to leaving the water running.
(3 persons x 2 times x 5 liters x E0.22/liter x 30 days ≁E E198)
(3) If you wash your car while using water flowing through a hose, you use about 240 liters of water. If instead you wash your car using a bucket filled with water, you will need only 30 liters and can save about 210 liters. If you wash your car twice a month, you can save about E100 per month, as compared to using a hose.
(2 times x 210 liters x E0.22/liter ≁EE92)
