| @The temple was once situated around the
place near the Uehonmachi Station of
Kintetsu Railway Line. It was dedicated to
Kannon (the Goddess of Mercy), familiar
with the people around here by the name of
" Nonaka-no-Kannon ". The temple
was moved here in the 13th year of Taisyo.
The Kannon was made by Gyoki (668-749),
and it was said that the Kannon was
a guardian deity of Tairano Kagekiyo ,
who fought bravely at Yashima in the
battle between Genji and Heike and
intended vainly to assassinate the winner
Minamoto Yoritomo after the battle. There
was also Sumikake Jizo deified in the precincts.
When people having prayers were answered
by Jizo, they made it a queer rule to splash
Indian ink over the image. There happened
a homicide incident in the 2nd year
of Genroku (1689), when a subordinate
named Chokichi of an authorized exchanger
was killed and deprived of money. At first
the Jizo was deified to let his soul
rest in peace, but later it became a deity
for people's prayer. |
