| @This temple was founded by a nun Jishindaishi
in the years of the Daido era (800-810),
who was a daughter of Sakanoue Tamuramaro
and later became an empress of Kanmu (737-806).
After his death she lived at this temple
as a nun and prayed for the repose of his
soul. Since then a lady connected with the
Sakanoue family lived at this temple as the
chief nun and the residence of the family
was situated in the precincts. There were
many nun's lodges until the first years of
the Meiji era and it has such assets as Kenponchakushokunehanzu
(a silk painting of Buddha's Nirvana) and
a temple bell made of copper engraved in
the 3rd year of Kenkyu (1192), which were
both designated as the important cultural
assets. |
