Mandai- ike ( Pond )
  3-chome , Mandai , Sumiyoshi -ku
[ Tezukayama 3-chome ] by Hankai Railway about 50m to the southeast
The Kumano Road is running on the west side of the pond . The pond was said to be made by damming back a valley caused by erosion of Uemachi table land and it was used for irrigation toward the end of the Meiji era. This area was once a sparsely populated place , so people hesitated to draw near for fear that a devil lived around here But when Shoutokutaishi recited a sutra named Mandala -kyo , the devil gave in to him . So "Mandai -ike " was said to be a corrupted form of " Mandala -ike " . A theory was put forward that the local name of Nagaino -ura recited in the Senzaisyu poems corresponds to this area but according to another theory , it was a moat of an ancient tomb . Cherry is now planted around here and there is a quiet appearance considering that it is situated in an urban city .
