From the Edo era Osaka kept developing
by reclaiming land from the sea toward west
and west .The Chikko (port ) district became
small for developing Osaka to meet its needs
. As its enlargement was required , the south
port development program was put into practice
in the 8 th year of Showa . First the plan
was set to work to reclaim land of 2,300,000
square meters from the sea but it was completed
only about 630,000 square meters before being
stopped by the War .
In the 33 rd year of Showa , the plan was
revised and set to work again . The construction
was completed struggling against the weak
soil in the 55 th year of Showa ..The land
of about 9,370,000 square meters was reclaimed
which corresponded to that of 5 % of Osaka
City . Earth and sand of about 140,000,000
cubic meters was used . It would have taken
55 years for 1,000 dump trucks a day to transport
.
The New-Tram car which was a new form of
public transport was supplied and a lot of
high , comfortable residential buildings
filled with a green tract of land were constructed
.
Residents began to move into the area in
the 52 nd year of Showa . Four elementary
schools , two junior high schools , one high
school , one university , one junior college
and facilities for necessaries are enough
supplied .
