Abeno Seimei ( 921 - 1005 ) was a famous
Tenmonhakase (Doctor of astronomy ) , Onmyoshi
( astrologer ) in the Heian period .
We are able to find him first in a historical
record as tenmontokugyoshi in the 4 th year
of Tentoku ( 960 ) and later in the first
year of Kanko ( 1004 ) as Sakyogondayu .
He was famous for his ability of prophecy
in "Konjaku monogatari " ( Stories
, Ancient and Modern ) and " Okagami
" (History, Large Mirror ) and was a
leading character who was said to be born
as a child of female fox in a narrative legend
. This shrine was founded by the Hoda family
who claimed themselves a descendant of Seimei
in the Kanko period (1004 -1012 ) .
