@The priest Ikkyu lived here temporarily in the last years of his life .He was said to be a son of the Emperor Gokomatsu , who was quite free, easy in nature and a man of unyielding spirit , and moved from place to place in Kyoto, Nara, Sakai and so on. He moved from Nara to Sakai and lived at Sumiyoshi in the first year of Bunmei (1469). In the following year , the big merchant Owa Sorin , who supported the reconstruction of the Daitokuji temple , invited him to live in Owa's newly build hermitage here . He called it the Unmonan hermitage and lived here with his disciples and he founded a hermitage named Syosaian in the ground of the Unmon a few years later . He lived here for around eight years and moved from here to the Shuonan hermitage in Tanabe Kyoto . The vestige of the trace of its gate and a bamboo thicket around here had reminded us of its appearance before the first years of the Meiji era .
