@Susanonono-Mikoto and Inadahimeno-Mikoto are enshrined in this shrine which was listed in the Engishiki (967) (a code of laws of an ancient times) .But it was not known when the shrine was founded . There is a monument in the precincts with an inscription of the site of Angu (a temporary palace ) of the Emperor Gotoba .The Gotobajoko made an imperial visit to the Kumano Shrine in the second year of Jokyu ( 1220 ) . During his visit he set a temporary palace Angu here which was called Wakamatsugosho . So the shrine was also called the Wakamatsujinja . His imperial visits to the Kumano Shrine were 25 times in his life and Fujiwara Teika who was an attendant gave an account of it
in his famous diary Meigetsuki .
