The Legend of Hogan Matsu (Pine tree called Hogan)
An incident known to have happened in February of the year 1185 during the Gempei War (the battle between the Heike and the Genji), Kuro-hogan MINAMOTO Yoshitsune attempted to cross over to Shikoku in pursuit of the Heike by launching a fleet of military vessels from Daimotsu-no-Ura (the former name of Ama-ga-saki). As it happened they were tossed about in a sudden storm and were forced back to Owada-no-Ura where he reformed his troops.

The pine tree that figures in the history is referred to both as the pine on which Yoshitsune sat (koshikake matsu) and the pine which Yoshitsune planted with his own hands (te-ue no matsu) but, judging from the situation at the time, the former story is probably the true one. Also, it is said that Yoshitsune was so delighted when the village headman presented him with a crucian carp wrapped in tangle (sea weed) he dubbed him with the surname Fujita (taking the character meaning carp).

In front of the front gate to the sewage plant of Ono, there is a memorial monument in Yoshitsune's honor.
