A Trace of the Bonze, Ikkyu (Mite-jima, in Komyo-ji Temple)
The bonze IKKYU was a Zen monk of the Muromachi Period born in Kyoto, whose priest name was Sojun and allonym Kyoun. In 1474, by imperial decree he served for a brief period as resident priest of Daitoku-ji Temple in Shibano, but from that period on he spent his life as a vagrant bonze.

It seems that during this period of vagrancy he spent a while in Nishiyodogawa Ward, and even now there is a picture signed by IKKYU Osho (Bonze IKKYU) in Komyo-ji Temple.

Among the numerous fables and anecdotes written about IKKYU-san is ?Ikkyu Hanashi? (Tales of Ikkyu, written in the Edo period). The real Bonze Ikkyu was not distracted by a drive for worldly fame and wealth. What drove him was a passion to spread the faith of Zen Buddhism.

Also in Komyo-ji is a writing by the 8th generation head priest of Ishiyama Hongan-ji Temple, RENNYO Shonin.
