Nishinari Ohashi Bridge Newel Post Monument (Hanakawa Jinja Shrine)

The dredging of Yodogawa River was completed in 1909 and Nishinari Ohashi was built. This bridge was located in the vicinity of the present Yodogawa Ohashi leading to Umeda Kaido (highway) and was also the gateway from Umeda to Nishiyodogawa Ward.

The inscription on the newel post reads ?Completed in the 12th month of the 41st year of Meiji? (Dec. 1908). The inscription went on to give the length as appx.735m and width as appx. 5.5m.

The origin of Hanakawa Jinja is said to have been that when the Empress JINGU passed through this place she was offered a freshly pounded rice cake wrapped with a leaf from the kashiwa (oak) tree and when she had savored it she inquired the name of the place but was told it had no name, so since the shape of the opposite bank resembled a nose she named the river ?Hana-kawa? and the ferry ?Kashiwa no Watashi.? In honor or her visit, Empress JINGU was installed as a god of the shrine and in later years worshiped together with Ebie no Ujigami (tutelar deity), SUSANOO-no-Mikoto.
