<Overview>
Tennoji Zoo opened in 1915 as Japan’s third zoo. Covering approximately 11ha, the zoo is home to nearly 900 animals of 230 different species, including elephants, lions, chimpanzees, and the only kiwi bird (New Zealand’s national bird) in Japan, fishing cats that hunt fish in a pond, and very popular koalas. The zoo has reproduced natural habitats for ecological exhibits such as the “IFAR” reptile house, the hippopotamus house, featuring Japan’s first pool that allows visitors to observe the hippos’underwater behavior, the rhinoceros house, which reproduces the African savanna, and the elephant house, which reproduces an Asian forest. The zoo’s director and staff also give presentations about animals on Saturdays and Sundays.
