Kiyomizu-zaka is located on the north side of Arisusan Kiyomizudera Temple, Reinincho, Tennoji Ward. It is a wide, gradual stone-paved slope running between Osaka Seiko Gakuin and Kiyomizusaka Temple (Seiko-in Temple). Its name is derived from the fact that it is located north of Kiyomizudera. There is a spectacular view from the precincts of Shin-Kiyomizudera Temple which is located at the promontory of the slope, and added to this is Tamade Falls, Osaka's unique waterfall, flowing over a cliff on the south side of the temple precincts, similar to Otowa Falls at Kiyomizudera Temple in Kyoto.
Also in this vicinity are the "Seven Famous Waters," seven wells of pure water (kiyomizu)_Masui, Ousaka, Tamade, Yasui, Arisu (Tosa), Kinryu, and Kamei.
MATSUO Basho has left us a haiku composed in the first year of Genroku (1694), on November 26: "Wind soughs through the pines / and circles round the eaves / end of autumn". There is a monument inscribed with this haiku in "Basho-en (Garden)" inside Seiko Gakuin.
