Tsurumi Ward is the only place left
in Osaka where gray-headed lapwings make their habitat. Mainly,
we can see them in the northern part of 6-chome in Morokuchi and
1 and 2-chome in Hama. Gray-headed lapwings (charadriiformes Charadriidae)
are resident birds. During their breeding season, between March
and June, they build nests in barren and agricultural fields. It
is said that the Japanese name "Keri" for this bird comes from its
chirping sounds, "kiri kiri." The bird has yellow legs, and white
triangle shapes appear on their wings when they fly. The contrast
of black and white is beautiful. They are very cautious, but one
can say the environment of Tsurumi is quiet and therefore it is
easy for them to make their home here. Although the times have changed
and a lot of agricultural fields have been replaced with residential
buildings in Tsurumi, we hope we can maintain a suitable environment
              to coexist with gray-headed lapwings.
Some say they haven't seen these birds in recent years, but if you
look carefully in agricultural fields during their breeding season
between March and June you may observe them there. |
