The god enshrined here is Sukunahikona. Ikune Shrine was a middle shrine
of Sumiyoshi Grand Shrine in the Edo period, but ended the association
in 1872, whereupon it became the official local shrine. It is said that
the main shrine was donated by Yodogimi, and construction work was completed
by Katsumoto Katagiri. The roof of the building is thatched with cypress
bark; the building itself created in the Ikkensha style, with ornate Momoyama-era
patterns in the zigzagged gable-work to the front of the structure, as
well as the doors. According to the written history of the construction
of Sumiyoshi Grand Shrine, Ikune Shrine was constructed circa 1600. It
was designated by the prefectural government as a tangible cultural asset
in February 1970. |
