PROFILE OF OSAKA CITY
Osaka City, located roughly at the center of Japanese archipelago, serves as the core of western Japan, with a population of 2,640,000 and an area of 213 square km.
Having developed as a transportational hub since ancient times, Osaka became the national capital in the seventh century. Since the late 16th century, the city has enjoyed particular prosperity as a commercial and industrial emporium. Developed on the alluvial plain created by Yodo River, one of Japan's largest, Osaka was naturally blessed with rivers; from early on, the city actively developed its waterways. This historic dependence on inland navigation for transport thus gained the city renown as Japan's representative "city of water". As the 21st century fast approaches, we of Osaka are committed to transforming our City into the cultural cosmopolis open to the world, by restoring the city's quality as a verdant "aquapolis" worthy of its fame.
