The history dates back to a spontaneous
market for the Ishiyama Honganji Temple town
and later it was developed into the Temma
Greengrocery Market and got prosperous under
the protection of the Shogunate. As the place was located in the interior of Osaka City, fresh fish lost some of its freshness, so the Zakoba Market, founded in the 9th year of Meiwa, 1772 (3-chome, Kyomachibori, Nishi-ku), located at the mouth of the river, was more prosperous gradually because of its convenient transport by vessel. And concerning dried fish, the Temma Greengrocery Market gave way to the Kaifu horikawa eidaihama (2-chome, Utsubohonmachi, Nishi-ku), which had been newly excavated at that time. There had already been spontaneous markets in various places of the city in spite of a prohibitory decree of the Shogunate, for it was inconvenient for the merchant to take greengrocery to the Temma Greengrocery Market. One of the virtual markets had been in Kizu for 100 years and the Kizu Naniwa Fish and Green-grocery Market was born in the 6th year of Bunka(1809) by permission of the Shogunate. These were the origin of the public wholesale market. The Central Wholesale Market of the largest scale of the East was founded on the 28th of March in the 6th year of Showa (operated in 11th, Nov, the same year). Besides the Central Market, the East and South Port Market are now operated. |
