The Honganji religious order tried to extend the scope of its influence and naturally got involved with many conflicts.
In the time of the 10th leader of its order named Shonyo(the first year of Tenmon, 1532) the Yamashina Honganji order was attacked by some samurais and the other religious order and burned to ashes.
At that time Shonyo took refuge to this place. The following year Shonyo was attacked by the same group of people and 21 persons sacrificed themselves for the protection of Shonyo, who barely survived his life and took refuge to Kishu district(Wakayama Prefecture).
The monument describes the incident. The letter of gratitude from Shonyo was left at Enmanji temple nearby with the monument for the repose of the dead.
