Yoshitsune was told by Yoritomo to defeat the Heike family who had been taking position at Yashima, left Kyoto, the new year in the first year of Bunji(1185) and was getting ready here to make surprising attack against them.
At that time Yoshitsune had been at odds with Yoritomo, so he had been determined to win the battle desperately at the expense of his life to recover from his brother's trust.
Kajiwara Kagetoki who was an staff attached by Yoritomo contended that every marshal vessels should be equipped with an oar that was easily available for both going forth and back.
But Yoshitsune did not agree with him.
In the midnight on the 17th of February, he started here in violent storm with 150 soldiers and 5 vessels and the next early morning he succeeded in reaching Yashima and on the 19th day he won the sea-battle of Yashima.
The argument between them was said to take place under the old pine tree which used to be around here.
