Godai Tomoatsu(the 6th year of Tempo〜the 18th year of Meiji,1835-85) was born in Kagoshima Prefecture.
In the early years of Meiji, when economy was deeply depressed and confused, he played a main roll to develop the economy vigorously.
He went on a tour of inspection around European countries in the first year of Keio(1865).
During the tour, he got interested in trade in Europe.
After coming home, he entered the government service for a while, but later, when he came to Osaka, he extended his business from the mining, spinning, to the railway industry.
In those days the Japanese indigo was not so good that Japan was obliged to import most of it from India. He made all kind of effort to make good production and founded a synthetic indigo factory accommodating beyond 300 workers.
The product was exported to European countries and became at its peak of export in the 10th〜11th year of Meiji.
But the factory was closed for the inactivity in the export trade.
