Sukunahikonano-Mikoto and Sugawara Michizane are enshrined in this shrine.
When Michizane was on his way to Dazaifu(Kyushu district), relegated by the Emperor, he passed by here and thought of by-gone days in Kyoto in tears. The shrine's name "Tsuyu" that means tears was derived from this legend.
But another legend has it that there was a well at the front of the shine, which gushed out for the first time in the rainy season and the season was "Tsuyu" in Japanese.
The name of Ohatsu Tenjin was derived from the famous play "Sonezaki Shinju (a double suicide)" by Chikamatsu Monzaemon (in the 16th year of Genroku(1703)).
The play dramatized a heroine of double suicide incident that took place in the precincts of this shrine.
