Sugawara Michizane as a main deity, Sarutahikono-Mikoto and others are enshrined.
The beginning of this shrine started to worship the Daisyogun deity which is now located beside the main shrine.
This shrine dates back to the 3rd year of Tenryaku(949) to rest the soul of Michizane in peace by the Imperial prayer of Gomurakami
The shrine had sometimes been burned to ashes before the shrine and the gate were constructed here in the second year of Kouka(1845).
The shrine is familiar with people around here named "Temmano Tenjin-san".
The Tenjin Matsuri (festival) offered at the shrine is one of the three major festivals in Japan and Funatogyo is a highlight of the festival, which is a parade of boats with candles and gorgeous ornaments moving up and down the river.
The 14 dolls, which are to welcome the Spirit on board, were said to be manufactured in the early years of Genroku (about 1690), designated as one of the collections of folk material by Osaka Prefecture.
