The site of Gempachi Ferry
   2-chome, Temmabashi, Kita-ku
at the west end of the Gempachibashi bridge, northern part of the river bed
[ Gempachibashi ] by bus, about 100m to the northeast
We find this ferry in a historical record in the last years of Genroku(about 1700).
The name of Gempachi was unknown if it was derived from a name of a man or of a place.
There was a farm village in Miyakojima area on the left bank of the river, which was connected with Kyo Road and on opposite side of the right bank was a line of houses of the government officials who served the Osaka Jodai (governor).
This area was a well-known site for cherry blossom viewing and was much crowded.
The ferry was famous as much as the Heita Ferry, which was situated at the upper stream.
The ferry was terminated in 1936, when the Gempachibashi bridge was built over the river but the name of Gempachi tells us there was once the ferry around here.
