According to a tradition of the temple, the retired Emperor Goshirakawa made a pilgrimage to Koyasan. On his way he was deeply impressed at the beautiful scenery around here. So, he was said to found this temple to think of his mother Taikenmonin.
Though the temple once boasted of its vast precinct, it is now a mere shadow of its former state because of the War.
There is an old tomb called Nuezuka about 500m to the southeast.
The site was said to be in the precinct of the temple.
There was an incident in the Heiankyo that the Emperor Konoe(about 1150) was distressed with a monster Nue every night.
Minamoto Yorimasa (He fought bravely and died at Uji in the battle of Genpei) shot it down to death.
People were scared at the figure of Nue, so threw it in the Yodogawa river aboard a vessel.
This site was said to be the place where people around here held a funeral for Nue when the vessel stopped.
