It is said that the retired Emperor
Goshirakawa founded this shrine. As Amaterasu-Omikami and many others were enshrined, this shrine is also called Jugo(15)-Jinja. The stone tower Hokyointo is in the precinct of the shrine, which is composed of 3 pieces piled up one after another with an inscription of being made in the 2nd year of Kagen(1304), was designated as a tangible cultural property by Osaka Prefecture. The Hokyointo is a stone tower where volumes of sutra were settled to worship Buddha, to hold a memorial service for the dead, or to be used as a grave. It is in general composed of a roof with 4 pricked decorations at 4 corners, of a stone tower inscribed with Buddhist images and Sanskrit characters(Bonji). But this tower has a unique form equipped with 3 pieces of stones piled up one after another. |
