The temple used to be at the place
of the present Fujita Art Museum, that was
later purchased and occupied by a big merchant
Fujita Denzaburo for his residence in the
45th year of Meiji. The gate of the temple was left as the front gate of the museum. The temple has a tomb of lovers, Koharu, Jihei, who were leading characters of the famous play "Shinju Ten-no Amijima" by the author Chikamatsu. They escaped secretly hand in hand from the Sonezakishinchi and passed through the towns along the Sonezaki river and crossed over bridges to reach Amijima and committed a double suicide. The tomb of them was moved to this place with the temple. |
