Kosan(1810〜1863) was born in Okayama
and came over to Osaka at age 17 and learned
from Naka Tenyu. He opened his private school at his residence for those who intended to study Western learning. The inner room on the first floor was used for his family and pupils were on the second floor. Among pupils were Omura Masujiro, Hashimoto Sanai, Fukuzawa Yukichi, Nagayo Sensai and others. He was the first in Osaka to vaccinate against smallpox and played an active part as a medical doctor. |
