In the first year of Bunji (1185, cf. Nakanoshima
Tsurumi course "The monument of Sakaronomatsu"),
Minamoto Yoshitsune sailed for Yashima in
the midst of storm during the battle of Genpei
(the battle between Genji and Heike) but
he was obliged to return back in rain because
of the weather. Then he prayed to the Sumiyoshi
Daimyojin (The God of the sea) for his safe
voyage, so the storm calmed down and he succeeded
in sailing across the sea to win the battle
against Heishi. The pine named Houganmatu
had been flourishing which was planted in
memory of his victory until it was burned
down by thunder in the 10th year of Meiji.
This is the site of Houganmatu transmission. |
