The God Sumiyoshi -Okami (the God of the
sea) is enshrined in this shrine. It is said
that this shrine was built by the shogunate
of Yoshimitsu Ashikaga (1358-1408) in the
2nd year of Eitoku (1382). This shrine holds
a curious divine service called Ichiyakanjo
of Nozato (The overnight shrine maidens of
Nozato) on the day of festival (on February
20 ). 7 girls who are selected among a parishioner
present respectfully offerings to the God
with 7 beautifully decorated wooden buckets.
It is said that this is a divine service
from the origin of a human sacrifice and
we can find the bucket which was made in
the 15th year of Genroku (1702) among those
buckets and that means the service was very
old custom. There is the Yodogawa Ebisu Shrine (the God of wealth) within the same site and many people there come to pray especially on the day of festival. |
