Ueda Akinari, who is the author of the story of Ugetsu and famous as a Japanese classical scholar and poet, stayed here at the invitation of the priest of the Kaguwashi shrine named Toshi. He stayed here only 4 years. However, it is said that he cultivated his scholarship for literature here. There is his grave too (it was founded at the site of the priest Toshi's graveyard at the second anniversary of his death).
The Kashima castmelt coin foundry was situated toward the north of the Kaguwashi Shrine. The foundry was working for only 3 years, in the period between the 3rd year of Genbun (1738) and the 1st year of Kanpou (1741). It made copper and iron coins of high quality, so people say, "Sake is Nada (Kobe district), Coin is Kashima" (Nada is the best place for Sake and so is Kashima for coin.)
