In the first era of Edo (the 6th year of
Enpou, 1678), the farmers who belonged to
the 22 villages living in the area of Kitanakajima
district (Higashiyodogawa-ku, Yodogawa-ku,
Nishiyodogawa-ku) of Nishinarigun (county),
Settsunokuni (province) built a canal by
themselves in order to flow the drain and
the stayed water into a river. This district was low and damp grounded and was surrounded by 3 rivers, Yodogawa, Kanzakigawa and Nakatsugawa, so it was very necessary for them to build a canal because they were damaged by flooding from an old times. The farmers of these villages often sent their representatives together to Edo, and asked the shogunate to construct a canal at the public expense, but they were turned down and were made to build it by themselves in return at the cost of most of nearly 2,000 ryo and they accomplished the big canal in about 50 days, situated from here to 5-chome Denpou, Konohana-ku, about 9.5 km in length, 22m in average width. Such legend was widespread that 3 representatives of them killed themselves by this incident. The canal worked enough for a long time until the reconstruction of the Yodogawa river in the 32nd of Meiji to do a favor for the residents. And now it takes the form of a road and so on with the development of urbanization. |
