The Emperor Shomu (701-756) made a petition of the building of the Kokubunji (province temple) and Kokubuniji (province nunnery) in all the provinces of the country in the 13th year of Tempyo (741). It is said that this temple was the Kokubunji in the Settsu province. At first the temple had a vast precinct and there were 7 cathedrals, a Buddha's bones tower and the others, but later it was on the decline for a long time. And it was reconstructed at the site of the Kunijima Filtration Plant in the 13th year of Ouei (1406) as a Zen sect temple. But it was removed here after that with its base stones of that time because of the extension of the Kunijima Filtration Plant.
