It is said that the priest Gyoki (717-749) founded the temple. At first it was called Saikoji. Kusunoki Masakatsu who is a grandson of Kusunoki Masashige (?-1336) lived in seclusion here after the Chihaya Akasaka Castle was defeated.
When Rennyo (1415-1499) stayed at this temple, he called it by the name of Jyosenbo. There are graves of Kusunoki Masakatsu and his son in the precinct. The temple has a bell which was stricken in emergency at the battle against Oda Nobunaga in the Ishiyamahonganji temple.
