When the time of the foundation of this shrine is unknown but its history dates back before the 1st year of Kyohou (1716). The shrine was named Temmangu shrine in the old times but it had the present name in the 4th of Meiji.
According to legend, when Sugawara Michizane (845-903) was relegated and removed to Dazaifu (Fukuoka prefecture) in the 1st year of Engi (901), he dropped in around here on the way and was deeply touched by the sight of thousands stumps of small pines and wrote a poem.
The shrine was consolidated by the Osumi jinja in the 42nd year of Meiji but was founded again because the residents displayed a good deal of enthusiasm for its independence.
