It
is said that, at the time of the battle of Ishiyama, there was a fortress
in Kotsuma Village (part of present-day Tamade) and the moat was dug around
it for protection against enemies. Furthermore, new stonewalls were apparently
erected as recently as the Edo period, with east and west gates. These
days, the moat measures approximately 1.8 m across at its widest point,
with a granite bridge for crossing the water. The remains of the moat
surround Tamade Middle School and Tamade-nishi Park and is said to have
remained in existence until about 1934, after which most of it was destroyed
by wastewater and other construction work. |
