The medallion of O.M.F.D The medallion that you can see to the left was devised and adopted in 1948 to symbolize the spirit of Osaka's firefighters. The shape of the shield represents our duty to protect citizens and their property from the ravages of flood and fire. The red of the border stands not only for fire, but also for our burning devotion to protecting the people of Osaka. The pale blue of the background signifies water, the firefighter's prime weapon in combating fire. The yellow of our city emblem "Miotsukushi" (representing markers to warn ships away from shallows and sandbanks) and the white of the letters "Osaka City" denote our self-sacrificing devotion to upholding the authority of our city and fulfilling the trust placed in us by the citizens of Osaka.
