Tennoji Zoo was opened in 1915 as the third zoo in Japan and
has been cherished by Osaka City citizens as a place of recreation
and education. Since its opening, the zoo has been continuously
growing and now keeps approximately 1,500 animals of 300
species on the premises of 11 hectares (27 acres). More than
1.6 million people visit the zoo every year to enjoy this
oasis in the big city. The zoo has been improving the facilities
to realize more ecological displays of animals so that the
visitors can watch the life of animals in the environment
as close as possible to their home land. The improvement
started with the opening of "IFAR" in 1995, a new
exhibition building of reptiles which was designed based
on on-site researches. In 1997, Japan's first underwater
viewing pool of hippos was completed. A new rhinoceros paddock
that reproduces the environment of African savanna was opened
in 1998, followed by the opening of new "savanna zone" featuring
various herbivorous animals in 2000. In January 2004, the
zoo's most recent facility "Forest of Asia" including
new housing facility of elephants was completed.
