Pointed-bow boats were one prominent form of boats used on Osaka's waterways during the Edo period; they were predominantly used as couriers, carting freight and other goods. A survey in 1752 found that there were 300 or so of these boats. They became a regular fixture in Suminoe with the excavation of the Yamato and Jusangen rivers. The bow of the boats were sharply pointed like swords, which led to them being called "Kensakibune (sword tip boats)."
